Queens Mom Saves Baby From Out-Of-Control SUV

NEW YORK (CBS 2) --  A Queens mother was recovering in the hospital on Tuesday night and being hailed as a hero after witnesses said she put her life in danger to save her young baby.

As the mother was pushing her child in a stroller in Astoria, an out-of-control SUV ended up on the sidewalk, destroying a parking meter and banging up the storefront of a business in the process.

Witness and crossing guard Myrian Rojas saw the vehicle and was able to jump out of the way. The terrifying moments were also caught on surveillance camera.

"I see a car coming like very, very speedy," Rojas told CBS 2's Sean Hennessey.

Rojas also tried to warn the mother to get out of the way.

"I say 'hey be careful, the car is behind you.' So the mommy turned around, but it's too late, already the car is close to her," Rojas said.

The mother was able to thrust the baby to safety, but witnesses said the woman was unable to get herself out of harm's way.

"Only when she turned around, she see the car close to her bag so only she pushed the baby...to save the baby," Rojas said.

"I saw her laying underneath the car and the carriage was right next to her, with her little baby," Peter Vigal said.
