Push On To Preserve Site Of Lindbergh's Takeoff
WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - On Long Island, residents and lawmakers want to preserve the site where Charles Lindbergh took off for his historic 1927 Transatlantic flight to France.

Those who stand at the spot behind the Mall at The Source in Westbury use the words "cool" and "amazing" to describe it.
There is already a monument of an airplane on the spot, but the property is set to go up for auction next week.
Town of Hempstead lawmakers want to make this area a historic landmark that cannot be changed, and they have started the paperwork to make that happen.
"And that's the important part of landmark status. Before the new owners make a move they have to come back to the landmarks commission," Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.
It was Adam Sackowitz, a 20-year-old Hofstra University student, who brought this to the town's attention :
"One of the most important parts of American history took place here," he said. "This is our history and it belongs to everyone."
