Pulaski Skyway Closes For First Of 8 Weekends
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- This weekend marked the first of eight weekends for which the Pulaski Skyway was to be closed in both directions.
The closure went into effect at 9 p.m. Friday and was to continue until 5 a.m. Monday.
Crews were installing floor beams as part of a massive makeover project for the 83-year-old span. New deck panels also will be added to the north side.
Martin Robins, director emeritus of Rutgers University's Voorhees Transportation Center, said earlier this week it would be interesting to see how weekend traffic flows out of the Holland Tunnel.
"And particularly the outlet roads coming out of the Holland Tunnel, because now everything is going to get squeezed into the New Jersey Turnpike extension," he told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.
But Robins said it's hard to judge because weekend traffic is not usually as intense and may sort itself out.
The state Transportation Department says the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway project will extend the life of the bridge by 75 years.
