Brooklyn Fire Leaves 12 With Minor Injuries
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A dozen people suffered minor injuries when a fire broke out Sunday in Brooklyn.
It happened around 2:25 p.m. on Flatbush Avenue near Winthrop Street in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
Officials said the fire was on the second and third floors of a four-story building. It was under control in just under an hour.
Firefighters used ladders to pull some people out, including Neriea Urraca, who is visually impaired.
"She just started hearing kids from the hallway screaming, 'there's a fire, there's a fire.' She was actually by herself in the apartment," her niece Ashley Davis told CBS2's Natalie Duddridge. "She had to leave through the fire escape, and that was the only way she got out just now."
Dwayne Smith said he had just pulled up to the building to visit family when he heard loud booms, saw the smoke and raced inside to help.
"I ran upstairs because I know kids is in the building and elderly people is in the building, so I ran inside and started getting everybody out," he said. "The kids was coming down screaming and crying and panicking."
Ali Moshin was at work and rushed home.
"I have two kids are safe and two kids in the hospital," he said.
Officials said four people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
