Prosecutors: Evicted L.I. Couple Left 26 Cats Behind
FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. (AP) -- Prosecutors said a couple evicted from their Long Island home left at least 26 cats behind, including some that had been living in the ceiling and walls.
Nassau County sheriff's deputies who went to the Franklin Square house for the eviction found the place overrun by the animals.
Prosecutors told Newsday that litter boxes in the home were overflowing and no food or water had been left out.
The home's former occupants, who are in their 60s, pleaded not guilty Friday to animal neglect charges.
The incident happened in March. Prosecutors said that since then, the cats have all been adopted.
