Proposal Would Curb NJ Tax Cap To Pay Police
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- About 30 New Jersey mayors have appealed to Gov. Chris Christie for help complying with a new limit on cost increases that takes effect Jan. 1.
The mayors on Thursday met with Christie to urge action on bills that would contain some local government costs and help them budget within a new 2 percent property tax cap.
The head of the state police union was also at the Statehouse to warn of massive layoffs and increases in crime unless towns get relief from the new cap. Earlier, the union called for public safety costs to be exempt from the cap.
Senate President Steve Sweeney and Christie say such a large exemption won't happen.
Assembly Republicans accused their Democratic colleagues of stalling action on property tax reform legislation.
Assembly Majority Leader Joe Cryan plans to introduce legislation Thursday that would temporarily exempt police, fire and emergency services personnel from the cap.
