Private Funding Secured To Save Westchester Bicycle Sundays

Con Edison and the Friends of Westchester County Parks are putting up $40,000 to replace the county funding that was pulled from Bicycle Sundays in the face of a more than $100 million budget gap.
Bicycle Sundays bans cars from a 6.2-mile-long section of the Bronx River Parkway from 10 a.m. to 2.p.m. on Sundays in May, June, and September. This allows cyclists the freedom to use the roadway.
County Executive Rob Astorino hails the arrangement as a new model to pay for what he calls the "nice-to-haves" as the county struggles to pay for the basics.
"Simply put, we had a problem. We brought people together and we came up with answers," said Astorino on Tuesday.
Astorino and county lawmakers have come to terms on a $1.7 billion dollar budget that does not raise taxes, but Astorino says he's ready to veto certain budget additions that he admits will probably be overridden.
