Presidential Recount Underway In Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The recounting of the presidential election results in Wisconsin is underway, the first candidate-driven recount in the United States since Florida in 2000.
Observers representing Democrat Hillary Clinton, Republican Donald Trump and Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein are spread out throughout Wisconsin to watch as ballots are recounted.
Trump won Wisconsin by about 22,000 votes, or less than a percentage point.
Stein requested the recount to ensure ballot tabulating machines were not compromised by hackers.
She said in a statement that "verifying the vote through this recount is the only way to confirm that every vote has been counted securely and accurately and is not compromised by machine or human error, or by tampering or hacking.''
There's been no evidence of widespread tampering or hacking that would change the results.
Workers have until 8 p.m. Dec. 12 to finish the recount. According to CBS News, if the candidates disagree with the result of the recount, they can appeal in circuit court within five days of the completion of the recount.
Stein has also requested recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Almost no one expects the recounts to result in a victory for Clinton over Trump, but Clinton's presidential campaign has agreed to participate in the recount effort.
"We intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides," Clinton campaign attorney Marc Elias said.
In a series of tweets Sunday, Trump said, "Hillary Clinton conceded the election when she called me just prior to the victory speech and after the results were in. Nothing will change."
In another tweet, he quoted from Clinton's concession speech: "We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead" and he concluded: "So much time and money will be spent – same result! Sad."
The recount in Michigan was to begin Friday and Stein is suing for the recount in Pennsylvania.
