Pregnant Woman Shot In Stomach In Yonkers, Forced To Deliver Baby
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman who was nine months pregnant was forced to have an emergency Cesarean section after being shot in the stomach in Yonkers.
The scary incident happened around 8:40 p.m. Thursday at a building on Bronx River Road. Investigators do not believe the shooting was random.
Residents who said they have seen security footage of the shooting told 1010 WINS' Eileen Lehpamer that it looked like she was being targeted.
It was the screams rather than the gunshot that prompted neighbors to rush from their apartment. The victim was lying in front of the elevator after the gunman was long gone, witnesses said.
"I heard her screaming first. I heard the shot and we came running out. I didn't see any blood either and that's what we were wondering about. Usually with a gunshot you'd see blood, but she was screaming," witness Jim Drago told CBS 2's Lou Young.
Another neighbor administered first aid.
"I was concerned for the baby and wanted to do what I could to help her," she said. "I mean, who shoots a pregnant lady? What type of person does that?"
Whoever it was, police believe he was waiting in the lobby when the victim arrived home from work.
Pregnant Woman Shot In Yonkers, Police Searching For Suspect
They said a man wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt could be seen waiting in the building's vestibule a few minutes before the pregnant woman came home.
"You see her walking in with her laundry bag and when she walked in, he just turned around and put her against the wall," a resident named Evelyn said. "He turned around and he shot her."
She said the shooter could then be seen calmly walking away as the woman was lying on the floor screaming for help.
The woman was shot once in the stomach and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where the baby was delivered, police said.
Both mother and baby are in stable condition.
Police are still looking for the suspect and reviewing the surveillance video. Anyone with information is asked to the Yonkers Police Department at 914-377-7725.
