Winning Numbers Drawn For 12th Largest Powerball Jackpot
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The first Powerball drawing of the year has one of the biggest prizes in the game's history.
The winning numbers for Saturday's $334 million jackpot were 5, 6, 15, 29, 42 and Powerball: 10. The jackpot is the 12th largest in Powerball history with a lump-sum cash prize for the winner of $205 million.
Customers were lining up earlier Saturday at a mini-mart in Queens hoping for a chance to buy a lucky ticket.
"Donate to church and then take care of the children and grandchildren, I've got eight," one man named Alex told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman. "And then, you know, travel the world."
Tickets were also printing out non-stop at Dan's convenience store in Yonkers.
"More than 2,000 tickets, I sell today," worker Rohit Patel told CBS2's Ilana Gold.
Players started lining up early trying to strike it rich.
Awilda Quinones of the Bronx feels confident she picked the winning numbers and she already has plans for spending the money.
"I want to win because I want to finish paying my house and go on vacation and retire," she said.
She wasn't the only one stocking up on tickets at $2 each. Lois Parsons was also dreaming big, buying tickets at several stores hoping the strategy works.
"This is the next winning Powerball. If that one doesn't win, this one's going to win," she said.
Gillard's in Bronxville is Janet Mitchell's go-to convenience store to play the lotto after work.
"Almost every day, I'm addicted," she told WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini. "My name is lotto. For real, I'm serious, I play it all the time."
With a jackpot this high, store owner Bansi Patel entered his own numbers as well.
"I want to win myself," he said. "But I always play customers first."
Lottery officials say the last time the prize was close to this amount was in March 2013, when a New Jersey man won $338 million.
But odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
The odds don't bother Jaime Josue in Manhattan, who purchased 300 Powerball tickets
"The more you put numbers in, you have a chance -- hopefully," he said.
Powerball's largest jackpot was more than $590 million in May 2013. The game would have to continue a few more rounds without a winner before it could reach that level.
