A-Rod Power Outage? Even Ike Davis Has More Doubles Than Yankees' $29M Man
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- While Con Edison is busy asking its customers in New York City to conserve energy during this early-summer scorcher, Yankees fans hope Alex Rodriguez can somehow figure out a way to dial up the power.
Sure, it hasn't been a total outage for A-Rod, whose solo home run Wednesday gave him 11 on the season. But the slugger has recorded a mere six doubles -- and no triples -- so far this year.
Consider this: Rodriguez -- with his 2012 price tag of $29 million -- hit two doubles in his first three games. So make that just four two-base hits since April 9.
Not good. Especially when his counterpart across town, Mets third baseman David Wright, is boasting 23 doubles. Heck, Ike Davis, batting just .190 for the Amazin's, has managed to leg out eight of them.
A-Rod's double troubles haven't been lost on Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long, who called the stats "alarming," according to the New York Post.
"Those numbers have to improve," Long told the paper, "and I think they will."
Long said the dip could be in part attributed to Rodriguez's diminished speed "out of the box." Still, he expects more from the high-priced slugger.
"I have seen enough that I know we are going to get more than just a glimpse," said Long. "We are going to get something special that lasts two months."
