Possible Engine Fire On Plane At JFK Airport
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Officials are investigating a possible small engine fire on a plane that was bound for Argentina at John F. Kennedy Airport.
It happened late Thursday night while the Aerolineas Argentinas flight was on the runway preparing for takeoff.
Cellphone video from a passenger on board shows flames shooting out one of the engines while photos from the tarmac show another view of what FAA officials described as a small engine fire.
Audio between air traffic control and the plane's pilots describing the scare can be heard on LiveATC.net.
Air Traffic Control: "Your right engine appears on fire Argentina 1301."
Pilot: "Roger, stand by. We have no indication, stand by."
But it appeared the flames coming from the Airbus A333 quickly extinguished on their own, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.
Air Traffic Control: "It appears the fire is out at this time. We are getting emergency vehicles for you now."
Pilot: "Thank you, thank you. Standing by."
Port Authority officials say by the time FDNY and airport firefighters responded, the flames were gone. No one was hurt.
The passengers on board were escorted off of the plane and taken back to the terminal where they were rebooked on other flights.
CBS2 reached out to the airline for comment, but was not able to get a response.
