Port Washington Police Chief Retiring After Four Decades On The Force
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A police chief on Long Island is retiring after nearly 40 years at the department.
William Kilfoil began his career at the Port Washington Police Department in July 1974 as a foot cop and he moved his way up, first as the district's school resource officer. In 1993, he became the police chief.
Kilfoil said there are some cases over the years that stick out in his mind.
"We got involved in a major drug trafficking operation. The investigation initiated here and ended up in Miami, where they were shipping out over $13 million of cash assets from drug sales," Kilfoil told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

Kilfoil said he's grateful for the opportunity he had to serve the people.
"I thank the public for giving me such a great living for me and my family for the past 39 years and I always gave it my best shot. At times, I made mistakes but I repaired those mistakes and went on," Kilfoil told Hall. "You don't last as long as I have in this business without people knowing that you're doing your best."
Kilfoil offered his advice for the next person who has the job.
"Don't lose your patience," he told Hall.
His last day is Tuesday, April 30th.
