Port Jervis Line To Resume Service On Monday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Metro-North Railroad says service is resuming along the Port Jervis line as it continues to repair damage from Hurricane Irene.
"We will return to providing a full schedule of 26 daily trains and 14 trains each weekend day," Metro-North announced.
Though service will return sooner than planned, that doesn't mean all track repairs will have been completed by then.
"However, given the tremendous progress made by Metro-North's employees and contractors, the original estimate for completion of all Port Jervis Line repairs has been moved forward from fall 2012 to June 2012," the Metro-North said.
The line serves about 2,300 riders a day in Rockland and Orange counties. Buses have been replacing trains in areas where tracks have not been repaired.
The continuing repairs mean travel time will be extended, three minuted for inbound trains to Hoboken/New York-Penn Station and up to seven minutes for outbound trains to Port Jervis.
In addition, three trains will see schedule changes. The 9:20 AM weekday inbound train from Port Jervis to Hoboken will operate 26 minutes earlier and depart 8:54 AM.
The 8:21 AM weekday outbound train from Hoboken to Port Jervis will operate 17 minutes later, departing Hoboken at 8:38 AM.
The 9:30 AM weekend train departing Hoboken for Port Jervis will be held for 20 minutes between Salisbury Mills and Campbell Hall to allow an eastbound train to pass.
Metro-North says the original cost estimate of up to $60 million has been cut to $30 million from $40 million. The railroad says it will return to its pre-storm schedule on January 15.
