Port Authority Reports Decline In Car Crashes
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is reporting a four percent decline in motor vehicle crashes in 2012 compared to 2011.
There were 6,033 at the agency's bridges, tunnels, airports and docks last year.
The agency says the decrease reflects a program that was established in 1998 to reduce motor vehicle accidents.
The Port Authority says there was a six percent drop in motor vehicle accidents at John F. Kennedy Airport in 2012. The agency says it performed a major safety upgrade at the Van Wyck Expressway exit to Federal Circle where there was a history of rear-end crashes.
There also was an eight percent decrease in motor vehicle crashes at the Holland Tunnel and its approaches after pavement markings were changed and pedestrian signals were improved.
