Port Authority Replacing Holland Tunnel Lights With LEDs
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Those traveling between Lower Manhattan and Jersey City will soon notice a difference under the Hudson River.
The Port Authority is replacing the more than 3,000 fluorescent bulbs in the Holland Tunnel with light emitting diodes.
The LEDs will be similar, but there will be a noticable difference.
"It'll look brighter. It almost looks a little blue-ish, but it's a lot brighter. It burns a lot brighter and cooler. It looks a little more brilliant than typical fluorescent or incandescent light bulbs," tunnel general manager Anthony Carvagno told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb.

He said the LEDs are green technology that will save a $250,000 a year in electricity. He also said they will require less maintenance.
The work should be done by fall.
