Port Authority Police Nab Yet Another Alleged GWB Toll Cheat
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Another day, another alleged toll cheat truck driver busted trying to sneak across the George Washington Bridge.
The Port Authority, which operates the GWB, said that driver Miguel Vivar, of Cliffside Park, was stopped around 8 a.m. Friday morning trying to cross the bridge into New York without paying the toll.
Port Authority Police spokesman Al Della Fave said eagle-eyed officer Jason Malice spotted the front of the license plate of the tractor-trailer was missing and the rear plate was obscured.
"He observed a tractor-trailer truck as it came to the toll plaza with no front plate and as it passed by him, he noticed the rear plate -- half of it was missing as well. He immediately pulled that vehicle over and there was no toll transponder at all," Fave told 1010 WINS.
Authorities also said that it wasn't the first time that Vivar allegedly pulled this type of trickery.
"As [Malice] was doing further checks, he found that there was a warrant outstanding for his arrest and actually it was for a prior incident that happened a month ago in September, where he did the same exact thing and failed to appear in court for that violation," Fave said.
In October, a truck driver from Virginia tried to evade the $65 toll by rigging up a cable mechanism to flip up his front license plate.
More recently, driver Edgar Malin was caught using a toggle switch on his dashboard to electronically manipulate the position of his plate.
Malin apparently bought the device on eBay for $40. Officer Malice was also involved in thwarting that alleged toll cheating incident.
Meanwhile, Vivar is awaiting arraignment on his latest charge.
