Poll: Most New Yorkers Support Citi Bike Program, But Are Concerned About Parking
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New Yorkers tend to like bikes, but a lot of them aren't too sure about giving up parking spaces for them.
The New York City Department of Transportation released drafts of locations for the new Citi Bike program on Friday, and they showed some 400 locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
There will be moveable solar-powered stations every few blocks -- on sidewalks, side streets. public parks and plazas -- and a total of 10,000 blue bikes will have sponsor CitiBank's logo emblazoned on them.
For a $95-a-year fee -- or a weekly or daily rate -- riders can grab a bike at one station and return it at another.
A new Quinnipiac University poll showed that residents strongly support the program, but many are worried about losing precious parking spaces to bikes.
The Department of Transportation said it's not sure how many spaces will be lost, but that most of the tentative sites are "no parking" or "no standing" spots now anyway.
