Yonkers Police: 12-Year-Old In Serious Condition After Being Shot In Neck
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 12-year-old boy is recovering at the hospital after two shooters fired into a crowd of kids outside a Yonkers apartment complex.
The search is still on for the suspects, CBS2's Christina Fan reported.
Neighbor said the victim and a group of children were playing near the front entrance of Yonkers apartments on Highland Avenue when two shots rang out just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. The boy was found laying on the pavement, shot in the neck.
"We were trying to get the police to hurry up and the ambulance to hurry up, to come because he was almost going to pass out. He was really hurt," neighbor Pamela Garrido said.
Police said the boy, identified as Denim Jones, was standing outside in a crowd when two suspects pulled up in a car, got out, and both fired a single shot in the direction of the group. The suspects then drove off in the same car.
"Stop the hanging out and stuff in front of the building and stuff with the children and all of that. That's what they need to do. Stop all that nonsense with these kids," said the victim's aunt, Thema Martin.
Martin told Fan violence like this is all too common in this neighborhood.
"The building. Police and the building, everything. Everybody should be do something about it because it's ongoing throughout the whole town," Martin said.
After the shooting, the suspects drove off in a car. Police are trying to determine the motivation behind the attack.
"I hope they find the guy that did this," Garrido said. "It's not right for ... for this violence to keep going on, especially in a community where everyone supposed to be helping each other out."
Police said they are processing forensic evidence and recovering surveillance video.
The child underwent surgery and is currently in serious but stable condition, Fan reported.
