Police: UPS Impersonator Bound Women, Burglarized L.I. Home

ELMONT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a man who they said impersonated a UPS worker to burglarize a home in Elmont.

The suspect was holding a box and wearing a brown UPS jacket, jeans and a brown skull cap when he rang the doorbell of a home on Barbara Street shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The suspect dropped the package he was carrying and pulled out a gun when a 35-year-old woman, who was home with her 9-month-old son and her husband's 52-year-old aunt, answered the door, police said.

"I thought that he was going to kill us," the victim, who asked not to be identified, told CBS 2's John Slattery. "Yes, of course."

"The minute I opened the door, he pried his way in and he pulled out a gun," said the victim. "Then he tied us up."

The suspect then bound the women with plastic ties and stole jewelry, credit cards, liquor and other items before fleeing the home, police said.

"Then he made me follow him in the house and gave him whatever we had," the victim told Slattery. "Just took old watches, iPad, Kindles."

No injuries were reported.

Detectives working the case said UPS jackets and caps can be bought on eBay. The victim didn't look for a UPS truck when she answered the door. She said she was so rattled by the incident that she wants to move.

The homeowner, who wasn't there at the time of the incident, said his wife was crying when she called to tell him what happened.

The incident also made neighbors skittish about receiving a delivery.

"I wasn't even going to come to the door," Marie Centauro told Slattery.

Despite there being security cameras outside the home, Nassau police said there is no video of the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black man, between 20 and 25 years old, approximately 6-foot with a slim build.
