Another Shooting In Violence-Plagued Huntington Station
HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Police are investigating whether the latest shooting in Huntington Station is gang related.
Ariel Perez, 21, and Bonnie McCoy, 23, were in front of a home on Church Street around 2 a.m. Wednesday when a man approached and opened fire, police say. Perez was struck several times; McCoy was hit once.
Both were taken to Huntington Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting comes just two weeks after the Jack Abrams Intermediate School (pictured) was shut down over fears of violence. Wednesday morning's incident was just a block away from the closed school.
"When you hear something like this it does say to many people 'Ok, see, we did the right thing in closing this school,'" Huntington Station community advocate Rebecca Sanin said.
"We need to address it [the shooting] as a community-wide issue," Sanin said. "This is not about the Jack Abrams Intermediate School; it's two blocks from the train station, a half-mile from the high school, and less than a mile from the school we're moving children into."
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
