Police: Taxi Driver Strikes Long Island Officers With Vehicle
HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (WCBS 880/AP) -- Authorities said a Long Island taxi driver was placed under arrest after he drove his cab into two off-duty police officers early Sunday morning.
The two Nassau County officers were pulled over to the side of Oakwood Road in Huntington Station.
Suffolk County police said taxi driver Thomas Moroughan pulled up near them and an argument started. Suffolk County Police Department Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky told WCBS 880 that Moroughan was apparently upset about the driving of the officers, who were said to be lost.
Police said Moroughan drove toward the men.
"The driver of the taxi took off knocking the officer to the ground and also hitting the second officer," Pelkofsky said.
One cop fired into the taxi, identified himself as a police officer and said to get out of the car.
Police say Moroughan refused to get out of the vehicle, but was eventually arrested.
Moroughan was treated for gunshot wounds and then arrested on charges including reckless endangerment and assault. No information on an attorney was available.
The officers were treated for cuts and bruises.
