Accused Suspect In East Flatbush Shootout With Police Arrested
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say they have arrested a suspect who was injured during a shootout with cops in East Flatbush early Friday morning.
The incident happened just after midnight around East 49th Street and Linden Boulevard. Police say plainclothes officers were in the area on a routine patrol when they saw 30-year-old Jerry Benoit standing on the corner adjusting his waistband.
When one of the officers approached Benoit, police say he took off.
That sparked a manhunt for the suspect until another cop saw him jump over a fence on East 48th Street. Police say he then began shooting at officers who returned fire, hitting him twice.
Benoit allegedly took off again and was later found hiding under a car. He has been charged with attempted murder, attempted aggravated murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and menacing.
He was taken to Kings County Hospital and is listed in critical condition. Two cops were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Police say they found a .38 revolver and PACA bullet proof vest at the scene.
