NYPD Top Cop Praises Officer In Salon Robbery Attempt
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CBS 2) – Police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted robbery that went wrong on Saturday evening.
The suspect, named as Winston Cox, tried robbing a beauty salon where an off-duty police officer was getting her hair done, police said.
After Cox burst into Sabine's Hallway Beauty Salon in Clinton Hill at 6:30 p.m., waved his gun and demanded cash, the officer identified herself, spooking the suspect who opened fire and missed, police said.
Officer Feris Jones, however, drew her weapon and fired an unknown number of shots.
"Officer Jones demonstrated professionalism and remarkable calm in taking police action while off duty yesterday and foiling an armed robbery, and possibly worse, after identifying herself as a police officer and confronting and deterring the gunman," said NYPD Commissioner Kelly.
The 50-year-old officer may have hit Cox. Police said it is believed that Cox was shot in either his right arm or thigh and may have bandages on his hands. He is also believed to be armed with a revolver.
Detectives swarmed the area near Lafayette Gardens Housing Complex from the air and on the ground while following a possible blood trail.
The police are asking that anyone with information in regards to the suspect call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
