Carjacking On Long Island Turns Into Chase Into New York City, Suspect Shot Dead
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A carjacking on Long Island turned into a police pursuit into New York City and ended with a shooting and crash in Queens that left the suspect shot dead.
Dozens of Nassau County and NYPD police officers surrounded the crushed silver car with bullet holes in its door, smashed against the side of a burger restaurant Tuesday evening, reports CBS2's Ali Bauman.
The NYPD was called to the corner of 217th Street and Linden Boulevard in the Cambria Heights neighborhood around 5 p.m. for reports of a man shot.
Police sources told CBS2 plainclothes officers with the Nassau County Police Department had been pursuing a vehicle out of Long Island into Queens where they fired at the suspect.
"It was like 'pow,'" said local resident Yvette Augosto.
"We heard a big 'bang,' 'boom,' a few shots," said witness Laron Josephs.
Josephs says he heard at least five gunshots and ran over to see officers pulling out the driver.
"When they pulled him out the door, I see they put him immediately to the floor and they came with the sheet and put the sheet over him," he said. "I already knew he was dead, and it was right away."
Nassau County police would only say officers were "involved in a shooting incident" with a subject who was "fatally wounded."
Residents say the block is usually busy with kids after school and are grateful no bystanders were hurt.
"It's scary cause I've never seen anything like it before," said Augosto. "Knowing I have a 9-year-old and thinking the neighborhood should be safe, but I guess it's not as I thought it was."
