Suspect Hospitalized In Police-Involved Shooting In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One suspect was shot in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn Sunday morning.
CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported the shooting happened around 7:15 a.m. in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn. NYPD sources said a 911 call came in for shots fired at 421 Rogers St.
The sources said three officers responded and told the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Paul Mathurin, as to drop his gun. The sources said the suspect pointed the gun at officers and that's when they shot him.
WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz reported the officers fired a total of 12 shots at him, hitting the suspect once in the hip.
The suspect -- who sources said is a 31-year-old black man from Brooklyn -- was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to survive.
1010 WINS' Darius Radzius identified the suspect as Paul Mathurin.
An officer involved in the shooting has been taken to Methodist Hospital to be checked out.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
A witness told CBS2 she saw a man walking down the street and firing shots into the air, while talking to himself.
She said he was not aiming at anyone and that he actually passed a woman on the street and didn't point his gun at her.
The woman said the suspect continued to walk down the street, firing shots into the air, talking to himself, and banging on a car when police approached.
She added that police repeatedly asked him to drop his weapon and he did not.
The investigation into the shooting continues. Ultimately, it's up to the NYPD Use of Force Division to decide if the actions were justified.
