Police Shoot Suspect Who Allegedly Went For Gun Being Held As Evidence
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teenage boy was hospitalized under police guard Saturday evening, after being shot by a police officer when he allegedly tried to steal a gun from a van police were guarding.
Around 4:30 a.m., the uniformed 77th Precinct officer was safeguarding a gun that had been placed inside a Ford van at 790 Bergen St. in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, in advance of obtaining a search warrant, police said.
Police earlier had recovered the gun, which was believed to be used in a shooting earlier in the night in which a man had suffered a graze wound to the head, police said.
The officer guarding the van saw three males walk in through the driver's side door. He got out of his squad car, identified himself, and ordered the men to stop, police said.
But the suspects did not stop, and the officer fired and struck one of them – a 17-year-old boy – in the left buttock, police said.
The injured teen was taken to Kings County Medical Center, where his condition was reported as stable, police said.
A second 17-year-old boy was arrested without incident, while the third suspect fled the scene, police said.
Charges were pending against the two suspects in custody Saturday night.
The officer was not injured, but was taken to New York Methodist Hospital for evaluation, police said.
