On the second floor of the building, police found the 40-year-old man holding a pair of scissors to his own throat. The man then grabbed the woman, pushed her to the ground, and threatened to stab her with the scissors, police said.

The officer fired twice at the man, wounding him in the torso. Paramedics took him to Kings County Hospital Center, where he was in critical condition, police said.

The 25-year-old officer was taken to New York Methodist Hospital after suffering from tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, police said. The woman was not injured.

Neighbors told 1010 WINS the woman lived in the building, and one neighbor said she had heard that the woman had an order of protection against the suspect.

The scene of the crime was directly across the street from Brooklyn Technical High School, and about a block from Fort Greene Park.

The investigation into the incident continued Wednesday night.
