Police Shed More Light On Katonah Stabbings

KATONAH, N.Y. (CBS 2) ― Why did she snap? That was the big question Monday night as police investigated a stabbing rampage targeting two little girls.

Their aunt is accused of repeatedly plunging knives into their bodies in a crime that has rocked a quiet Westchester County community.

CBS 2's Tony Aiello has learned new details on this "babysitter horror."

She is 39-year-old Lisa Turkki and she's charged with an unimaginable crime.

Police said Turkki stabbed her two young nieces while babysitting Saturday night at a $1 million-plus home in Katonah.

"I just can't imagine how tragic it would be for the mother, for everyone involved," one neighbor said.

On Monday, Bedford police released some additional details.

"There were two kitchen knives that have been recovered that appear to be the weapons," Bedford Police Lt. Jeff Dickan said.

However, cops gave little info as to the motive.

Turkki was at her sister's home on Girdle Ridge Road babysitting her nieces – 7-year-old Maeve and 9-year-old Annabel Kelly. She called 911 to report stabbing the girls. Cops found them in the kitchen injured but alive.

"The children did, um, speak with officers at the scene. They were conscious," Lt. Dickan said.

Police don't believe parents Joe and Ava Kelly had any inkling the girls might be in danger if left alone in their own home with their own aunt.

"The children's own aunt doing something like that ... I can't imagine that with my own daughter," a neighbor said.

A Girdle Ridge Road address carries major cachet. The Kellys live across the street from the Martha Stewart estate. The next property down the road belongs to designer Ralph Lauren.

The Kelly home has extensive green technology and was featured a few years ago in an environmental blog. Now it known for a crime that shocks the mind and defies the imagination.

Both girls are improving. They are in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.
