Police: Sergeant Rescues Man Trying To Commit Suicide On Subway Tracks In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD sergeant headed to work jumped onto the subway tracks to rescue a man who was about to commit suicide in Brooklyn Tuesday, police said.
Around 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Michael Burrello of the NYPD Intelligence Bureau was standing on the 86th Street R Train platform n Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, about to get on the subway to go to work, police said.
While standing on the platform, the sergeant heard other subway passengers yelling for a train to stop, police said. Burrello then saw the 39-year-old man lying on the tracks in front of an oncoming train, which did stop two to three subway car lengths before reaching the man, police said.
Burrello jumped onto the still-electrified tracks to attend to the man, who said he had lain down on the tracks and was planning to kill himself, police said. The sergeant convinced the man to stand up, and he and several Good Samaritans lifted him back onto the platform, police said.
Burrello escorted the man out of the station and called 911, police said. EMS responded to the scene and took the man to Lutheran Medical Center.
The man had suffered no visible physical injuries, but was to be evaluated at the hospital, police said.
