Police: Robbery Suspects Posed As Utility Workers Before Victimizing Elderly Man
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for two robbers accused of posing as utility workers to push into the home of a 90-year-old man in Queens.
Authorities spoke to an elderly couple that went through an apparent frightening ordeal on Tuesday in Rego Park.
The elderly man was home alone when two individuals posing as utility workers rang the doorbell before pushing the victim down, ran inside and took cash and jewelry before fleeing, police said.
The distraught couple didn't speak to reporters, but one neighbor, Jessica Pescatore, recounted what the family told her happened.
"I heard that two men saying that they worked for a boiler company wanted to come in. They pushed through, they had a knife and they stole jewelry, money and luckily he didn't get hurt. For this neighborhood, nothing really like that happens around here so we're really worried," Pescatore told CBS 2's Amy Dardashtian.
Police confirmed the elderly victim wasn't seriously injured.
Authorities are now searching for the suspects, who police said got away in a red getaway car, possibly an SUV.
