Police Responding To Fire In Brooklyn Discover Double Shooting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police responding to reports of a possible fire in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn Sunday discovered two people who had been shot.
According to authorities, police were responding to a 911 call of a fire at 885 Gates Ave. in the Stuyvesant Gardens Houses around 4:30 p.m. when they discovered a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head.
EMS transported the victim to Woodhull Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, 1010 WINS reported.
There was also a smoke condition within the first-floor apartment, police said.
Upon further investigation, officers discovered a second shooting victim outside the building. A 38-year-old man was found in the rear courtyard with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and torso.
That victim was taken to Kings County Hospital Center in stable condition, police said.
Neighbor Harold told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten the incident made him fearful.
"Because this is not something that occurs often. Now today you just hear something like that so it makes you scared," he said. "Another life is taken. And it's very important that people value their lives. If they have differences there should be a way that people should learn how to mediate or manage their differences."
Another neighbor, Steven Mack, told Baumgarten the incident was disappointing because the neighborhood had been getting better.
"I'm really shocked because crime has went down here, so I'm really surprised that this taken place here. Because we haven't had this in a long time. I haven't seen this police activity in a while so; I'm disappointed too and it just lets you know that you're still in New York," Mack said.
Police have not identified the 24-year-old who was killed, pending family notification.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
