Police: Queens Burglary Suspect Poses As Telephone Repair Man
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching Friday for a burglary suspect who they said poses as a telephone repair man to gain access to homes in Queens.
The suspect was wearing a green vest, helmet and glasses when he convinced a homeowner on Inwood Street in South Ozone Park to let him in Friday morning, police said.
The man was wearing an official looking utility worker's uniform and knocked on a woman's window to tell her that her cable was out, CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported. By the time the woman had confirmed that her TV and phone were both working, her husband had already let the man inside.
Once the man was inside he drew a gun and the woman's husband struggled with him. Before he fled the scene the alleged intruder dropped his glasses and a part of the gun.
Investigators spent Friday afternoon combing the home for additional clues. The apparently phony utility worker even went so far as to cut the family's cable lines, police said.
Investigators were trying to determine if the case is related to another push-in robbery in the neighborhood, CBS 2 reported.
Residents in the neighborhood were on edge.
"You really don't know who you're talking to or who you could be opening your door to. That's something to think about," Selina Floyd said.
One woman said she fears for her father's safety.
"It is scary because it's right in the neighborhood and he's older so he could be walking to the car, somebody could knock him over, anything could happen," resident Khloe Washington told CBS 2.
Police warn you should not open the door for anyone you don't know, especially if they are offering services or repairs you did not order.
