Police Pull NJ Suspect From Burning Car
HILLSIDE, N.J. (AP) -- Two New Jersey police officers pursuing a stolen car early Sunday ended up rescuing the driver after the vehicle crashed and burst into flames.
The driver, 29-year-old Shariff Barrett of Bloomfield, and the officers were treated for minor injuries related to the crash, which occurred around 1 a.m. in Hillside.
Authorities say Barrett had stolen the car at gunpoint in Irvington on Saturday night, then later drove into Hillside.
The two officers -- whose names were not disclosed -- saw the car on Route 22 around 12:45 a.m. and gave chase.
Barrett then drove for about a mile before crashing the car, which then flipped over. The officers then shattered a window to pull him to safety.
