Police Probe If Female Bank Robber In Darien Is Linked To 2 Other Bank Robberies
DARIEN, CONN. (CBSNewYork) -- Another bank has been robbed at the hands of a woman in Connecticut, bringing the total count to three in two states with in less than a month.
Now, police are starting to question if the suspect is the same person.
As CBS2's Lou Young reported, if you walk up to the Chase Bank on Noroton Avenue, you'll find a Darien police officer stationed just inside.
That's because of a gun-toting bandit in a yellow hooded parka and dark pants who was caught on camera in the midst of a bank robbery.
"I can't believe it! In Darien? Oh my God I can't believe it," said Christie Schutzman.
More jarring, it appears the robber is the same woman who hit a Greenwich bank on Jan. 30 and another in Glen Rock, New Jersey on Feb. 18.
She's described as being just over 5-foot-tall and apparently wears wigs, big glasses and totes intimidating weapons, Young reported.
"Three in a short period of time; yea, I mean, she's been successful," said Sgt. Jeramiah Moran, with the Darien Police Department. "If it's the same person, she's going with what's worked so far."
Police said if she is the same person, she adjusts her MO depending on the layout of the bank.
In the Darien bank robbery Tuesday afternoon, she pulled a large, dark metal handgun on an employee at a cubicle near the entrance and forced her way behind the counter, putting bundles of cash in a blue shopping bag, Young reported.
The description of the robber has people remarking how she could be anyone.
The gun looks similar to the one used in the previous robberies, apparently a paintball gun, like the one that was left behind in the Glen Rock robbery.
"Bank robbers get caught," Moran said. "I don't know too many who haven't gotten caught because when they are successful, they keep trying."
And this time, police said they got some excellent images during the getaway that proves promising.
Although Connecticut police won't disclose the exact amount of money taken in those robberies, CBS2 was told the suspect in the Glen Rock case got away with well over $100,000.
