Police Probe Crash That Killed Girl, 15, In Yonkers
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation was under way Saturday morning after an out-of-control sport-utility vehicle hit several people at a street fair in Yonkers, leaving a 15-year-old girl dead and four others injured.
Police said the Jeep plowed into four people on McLean Avenue around 9:10 p.m. Friday, leaving a 15-year-old girl dead.
The girl remained unidentified Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, two sisters ages 12 and 16 were reported in very critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center, while two others were taken to Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville with comparatively minor injuries, according to a Journal News report.
According to witnesses, a black Jeep backed out of a parking spot at a very high speed and hit several cars. Once in drive the Jeep hit several more parked cars and then plowed into a group of people.
"We saw a black Cherokee backing out of the spot uncontrollably. They hit like two or three cars, then it went into drive and it shot out of the parking lot, and hit two more cars, and then they wind up hitting the two girls," witness Vincent Santini said.
The accident happened near Coyne Park, where the Church of St. Paul the Apostle was holding its carnival, according to the newspaper.
No charges had been filed in the crash as of Saturday morning.
