Police: Prank Call Sends Hostage Team To Freeport Home
FREEPORT, NY (AP/CBSNewYork) - A crank call sent police rushing to a Long Island apartment building on Friday night, mistakenly thinking that a man was holding his family hostage inside.
Nassau County police say someone phoned the Freeport Police Department at around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, claiming to have taken his wife and child hostage in his apartment on Brooklyn Avenue.
Police came in a hurry. Dozens of officers set up a secure perimeter around the building, and the Nassau County Emergency Services Unit, the Bureau of Special Operations and hostage negotiators were also called to the scene.
But the potentially dangerous situation was defused when the 36-year-old man who lived in the apartment said it was all a hoax. He told police he hadn't made the call, and let them inside to see that nobody was being held prisoner.
Police said that there were no injuries reported, and they are now investigating who placed the mysterious call.
Who would you think made that call if it was you who was the victim of this hoax? Possibly unruly kids, or maybe someone looking for revenge? Let us know what your first reaction would be...
