Police: Phony IRS Scammer Targeting Residents In Fairfield, N.J.
FAIRFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Fairfield, N.J., warned the public Saturday to watch out for an IRS telephone scam that has targeted two residents in the past week.
Police said a caller with an "Indian voice" contacts the victim claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service Investigative Division. The caller says he has conducted a seven-year audit on the victim, and says the victim owes some amount of unpaid taxes, police sad.
In one case, the amount allegedly owed was $15,000, police said.
The caller goes on to say IRS agents will be coming to the victims' homes to seize their property and arrest them, and says there is nothing that can be done about it at this point – in what police called "an obvious attempt to pressure the victim."
In both Fairfield cases so far, the victims have caught onto the scam and did not lose any money. But they believe if the victims had not caught on, the caller would have instructed the victim to send money to settle the issue.
Police said the caller speaks fast and is hard to understand, and is "very aggressive in his tone."
Police advised that anyone who receives such a call should never send any money, but should contact an actual IRS office and local police.
