Police: Person Killed In Hit-Run Crash On Southern State Parkway
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One driver was killed in a hit-and-run crash involving two vehicles on a Long Island highway Friday morning.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on the eastbound Southern State Parkway west of Route 110.
As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, police said the driver was fatally forced off the road by another vehicle that was speeding recklessly.
The driver's car was struck from behind by another vehicle, sending his car careening off the road and in the trees near exit 31, CBS2 reported.
"Poor victim here, obviously driving in the right hand lane minding his own business and tragically struck from behind by a vehicle obviously traveling way too fast," Maj. Joseph Tripodo, New York State Police, said.
Eastbound lanes were closed for hours as police investigated, causing backups during the morning rush.
Investigators said a Nassau county resident was heading east towards his job when he was run off the road by an SUV. Witnesses said the SUV was speeding in the left lane, then swerved into the right lane and hit the victim.
"This rear end collision forced the black Maxima off the roadway into a tree where the operator of that vehicle, traveling alone, was killed instantly on impact," Maj. Tripodo, said.
The vehicle that left the scene was described as a light colored, possibly gray, SUV with tinted windows and significant front end damage, New York State Police said.
The SUV had a possible partial New York license plate of GHJ and was last seen on Route 110 heading toward Amityville.
