Police: Man Went On Vehicle Theft, Bank Robbery Spree On Long Island
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police on Saturday were holding a man who was caught in Buffalo, after he allegedly stole three vehicles and robbed two banks in a period of five days.
Barry Napolitano, 44, of Northport, Long Island, was charged with two counts robbery, burglary and grand larceny in connection with the incidents.
Police alleged Napolitano stole a Jeep from a garage at the Huntington Jeep dealership, at 5080 Route 25 in Commack, early on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The same day, Napolitano allegedly robbed the Chase Bank at 120 Main St. in Port Jefferson, police said.
Four days later, around 7 p.m. this past Monday, he allegedly stole a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox from the garage at a house at 860 Fort Salonga Rd. in Northport. Five hours after that, police claimed, Napolitano stole a 2005 American IronHorse motorcycle from a home at 4 Seneca St. in East Northport.
The following day, he robbed a Capital One Bank at 64 Main St. in Stony Brook, police said.
"The people themselves reported the vehicles being stolen," Suffolk County police Detective Sgt. Richard Auspaker told WCBS 880.
With help from the U.S. Marshals Service, the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Force, and the New York State Police Violent Felony Warrant Squad, Napolitano was nabbed on Friday in Buffalo, police said.
He was turned over to Suffolk County police at 11:25 p.m. Friday, and was set to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, police said.
