Police: Man Stole Car, Slammed Into Building On Long Island
PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly stole a car and crashed into a building on Long Island.
Suffolk County police said the man, Michael Nash, was walking past the Jiffy Lube at 452 Medford Ave. in Patchogue, when he saw a 2008 Honda parked outside with the keys in the ignition.
Nash decided he would steal the car, and he hopped in and drove down Route 112, police alleged.
Suffolk County police Officer Gary Quenzer was responding to call at nearby Terry Brothers Tiers, at 522 Medford Ave., where Nash had earlier allegedly tried to steal a 2005 Ford pickup, police said.
Quenzer saw Nash leaving the Jiffy Lube in the stolen Honda and tried to pull him over, police said. But Nash went on speeding down Route 112 and eventually lost control – crashing into the front entrance of Avenue Sound at 260 East Main St. in Patchogue, police said.
Nash, of Patchogue, was treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, and was and released into police custody, police said.
Nash was charged with grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and reckless endangerment. He was set to be arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
A woman in the Avenue Sound store refused medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries after Nash allegedly crashed into the building, police said.
