Police: Man Seriously Hurt After Icy Long Island Expressway Causes 3-Car Crash
MELVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A patch of ice on the Long Island Expressway is being blamed for a three-car crash that seriously injured a man early Sunday.
Suffolk County Police said a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Neil Wade was headed eastbound on the LIE between exits 48 and 49 around 3 a.m. when his vehicle hit a patch of ice and struck the center divider.
Soon after, Wade's truck was hit by a Toyota pickup that also slid on the icy roadway. Wade, who had gotten out of his vehicle to inspect damage, was struck by his own car after the Toyota slammed into it.
Then both the Toyota and the Trailblazer were struck by a Jeep, driven by Michael Aguanno, which also slid on ice, police said.
The 40-year-old Wade, of Islip, and the driver of the Toyota, 47-year-old Peter Naughton, of East Setauket, were both transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.
Police said Wade suffered a broken leg and facial fractures. Naughton was treated for minor injuries and released.
Aguanno, 37, of Ridgewood, Queens, was transported to Plainview Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
