Police: Man Mugged At Gunpoint At Metro-North Station In Harrison
HARRISON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Metro-North mugger has struck again.
A masked gunman is terrorizing riders along New York's busiest commuter train line.
Evelyn Collins didn't mince words Tuesday when she spoke to CBS 2s Tony Aiello about the Metro-North mugger.
"I just hope they catch the person. I'd feel a little safer. I'm just more cautious now," Collins said.
Late Monday night a man was robbed at gunpoint after he got off the train and started walking away from the Harrison station, police said.
It was the eighth such attack at a station along the New Haven line this year. In most of the incidents the victims were taken completely by surprise, approached from behind by a man who then sticks a gun in their face.
The mugger dresses in dark clothes and a ski mask. He's armed with a dark colored handgun. He's been taking cell phones, wallets and briefcases, police said.
"Be vigilant. Look around you at all times. Try to be aware of your surroundings," Harrison Police Chief Anthony Marraccini said Tuesday.
Marraccini said there's a strong possibility one man is responsible for all the attacks on commuters.
"In almost every case he has ordered the victim to lie down on the ground. It keeps the suspect safe from attack. And when you have somebody lie down, it's a submissive position, puts them at an extreme disadvantage," Marraccini said.
Metro-North and Sound Shore community cops have stepped up patrols and Harrison is offering a $10,000 reward for help capturing the mugger.
"It's hard to catch these people. Obviously, they're not gonna come out if they see a police officer on the tracks," commuter David Hornig said.
But for frightened commuters, it's a reassuring sight.
