Gunfire suddenly broke out around 7pm Saturday as a group of boys were playing basketball outside of P.S. 119 on Avenue K in Flatlands.
A 13-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks but the suspect kept firing, shooting 15-year-old Dequan Mercurius in the chest. Both boys were taken to Kings County Hospital where Dequan died.
Dequan's grandmother Cecily Mercurius said there is no way her grandson could have been the target of the shooting.
"He's beautiful and this is not because I'm his grandmother," she said. "He's a comedian. He always makes you laugh."
Cecily says Dequan had been attending summer school and was studying on Saturday for a test he had on Monday.
No word on the 13-year-old's his condition. The investigation is still ongoing.
