In two separate cases, authorities say teenagers walking home from school on Long Island were robbed were hit, bitten, and robbed of their cell phones.
Nassau County Police Lt. Kevin Smith tells WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that the first case happened outside the Valley Stream Central High School, where a 16-year-old was leaving class, was attacked from behind, and hit on the head.
"The boy was taken to a local hospital by his parents, where it was discovered that he had suffered a fractured jaw," says Smith.
The suspect is still on the loose.
In the second case a 14-year-old was outside Lawrence High School when he was bit in the arm - breaking the skin - and his iPhone was taken.
An arrest was made in this case.
Smith says more patrols will be in place outside the schools.
"We recommend that, when they're walking home from school, to be a little bit more aware of their surroundings, maybe not have their radios on as loud, keep the phone in your pocket, because we don't want people to set themselves up as targets," says Smith.
