Police: L.I. Drug Suspects Tried Running Over Officers
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two Long Island men could face assault charges after they allegedly tried running over plain clothes officers who had them under surveillance on suspicion of drug trafficking.
The incident happened around 12:20 p.m. Thursday in Williston Park. Nassau County police say narcotics officers were monitoring a parked white Mercedes-Benz with Florida license plates near a 10-minute oil change garage on Willis Avenue, 1010 WINS reporter Carol D'Auria reports.
Authorities say the detectives witnessed what appeared to be a drug transaction taking place between three people. When police moved in to try and make the arrest, the suspects jumped into their car and allegedly tried to run over the officers several times, police said.
One of the officers fired two shots blowing out the rear window of the suspects' car, D'Auria reports. No one was injured.
The suspects fled in the Mercedes, but were soon captured in nearby Albertson.
People in the neighborhood say they are shocked something like this would happen in the area.
"This is a very quiet, respectful, law-abiding neighborhood," one resident said, "this is the first incident of anything like this."
The suspects could face a number of charges including assault on a police officer and reckless endangerment.
