Suspect Injured In Police-Involved Shooting In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect was injured in a police-involved shooting that happened during a traffic stop early Friday morning in Newark.

Police say the driver of a car along with another vehicle tried hitting an officer on Springfield Avenue near South 11th Street in Newark around 1:30 a.m., CBS2's Ali Bauman reported.

Officers can be heard describing what happened in scanner audio captured on Broadcastify.com.

"Code 3. We had a car pull over and try to hit us," an officer says. "Have 503 come over here."

It was then that one driver allegedly revealed a weapon.

"They have a vehicle that just tried to hit them. He discharged his weapon," a dispatcher says.

One officer shot at the cars, hitting one driver, Bauman reported. Both cars drove away from police, but one of the vehicles went to University Hospital. The car had bullet holes on the side, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

Sources say a man then walked himself into the emergency room. Authorities say the suspect is in stable condition. It's unclear if there were any other passengers inside the car.

"Things people do, you know, it's shocking," said resident Sandra Downs. "I hope police straighten this matter out."

"What happened last night was just terrible," said resident Roclord Kemp. "Cops ain't did nothing but do their job and all you gotta do is your job. Be a happy human, be a happy citizen, live life and stop all the nonsense."

No members of law enforcement were hurt, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Police believe they have everyone who was allegedly involved in custody. So far, no charges have been filed.

Police have not said yet why the car was pulled over.

The investigation is ongoing.
