2 Suspects Nabbed, 1 Still At Large After Police-Involved Shooting In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The search is on for a suspect in connection with a police-involved shooting incident that unfolded Sunday night in Brooklyn.
It happened at Monroe Street and Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Three plainclothes officers were near the 88th Precinct station house at around 7 p.m. when at least three people -- one holding a gun -- tried to rob a detective of his cellphone, police said.
The detective then fired his weapon, striking the armed suspect in the right arm and torso, police said.
The 20-year-old alleged gunman, who was seen on surveillance video from a nearby grocery store, was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
Police said the weapon the he pulled on the detective was actually a BB gun, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.
A second suspect, a 16-year-old male, was arrested. Police are still looking for the third suspect, who fled the scene on foot. Authorities said they know that suspect's name, but they have not released it to the media.
The two suspects who were apprehended admitted to police they participated in at least four street robberies beginning in late September, authorities said.
In addition to the suspect at large, police believe there may have been two others on the scene as well.
Investigators have been working to determine if the same suspects are the ones accused of robbing a woman who was responding to an online ad for an apartment earlier in the day. But NYPD Chief of Manhattan Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters at a briefing in Midtown that investigators do not believe the incidents are connected, although he added "it's not a hundred percent."
Residents said there have been problems in the neighborhood.
"It's really scary out here," Kisha Johnson said. "You can't go around taking people's things. It's just sad."
"It happens a lot here," Brent Haben Shaw said. "It usually happens if they're standing up waiting for the bus or they're not paying attention and they're crossing the street and they're looking down. I'm a personal trainer over here, and I always try to tell people be vigilant."
The officer who fired the gunshot was treated for ringing in his ears.
