Police Beef Up Patrols After Recent Rash Of Burglaries In Nassau County
MANHASSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Nassau County are increasing patrols after a recent rash of burglaries in upscale neighborhoods.
Police have reported as many as 27 recent break-ins, mostly south of the Northern State Parkway from Manhasset Hills east to Roslyn Heights with many happening around Shelter Rock and Searingtown roads.
"Broke through the windows, came in, took a lot of stuff," one resident told CBS2's Jennifer McLogan. "Jewelry, brand new Italian loafers."
Investigators said it's happening mainly on weekend nights or early evening. They're mostly forced entries at the rear of the home, using tools to break in sliding doors or basement windows. Jewelry, safes and cash have been stolen.
"It's very unsettling, because you feel safe around here. It causes some fear," Christina Richer said.

Police said they noticed the increase in break-ins after Columbus Day.
"We do believe they are professional burglars and they're well-organized and we'll keep these resources in the area as long as it takes for us to solve this problem," said Inspector Sean McCarthy.
Police say the thieves have been looking for unoccupied homes and seem to work in pairs. They believe that the crooks have been making quick escapes on the nearby Long Island Expressway.
Investigators said homeowners with alarms that go off are usually spared.

Residents met with police at the Shelter Rock Library.
"We do believe they are professional burglars, and they are well organized, and we'll keep those resources in the area as long as it takes to solve the problem," McCarthy said.
Police are asking residents to remain on alert and report anything suspicious.
No one has been injured in any of the heists.
