2 Severed Arms Found In Hempstead In As Many Days

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A second human arm was found in Hempstead, Long Island in as many days, and police have launched an investigation into whether it is connected to a missing mother.

As CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported, both Suffolk and Nassau county police were on the scene after a severed arm was found in the backyard of a home on Stewart Avenue in Hempstead around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The arm was found in a fenced-in backyard in the bushes, police said.

"It's just getting kind of crazy, and it's scary, because I have teenage daughters, you know, and it's really, really sad," a local woman said.

The dismembered body part was taken to the Nassau County Medical Examiner's office for examination.

Just two blocks away on Wednesday, another severed arm was found in the yard of a home on Webb Avenue in Hempstead

The arm was found around 2 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police late Thursday were not saying whether the two discoveries are related.

"Who would do something like that?" said neighbor Adrian Boyd. "I don't know. I couldn't believe it. I'm still weirded out."

Suffolk County homicide detectives have taken the lead in these cases, trying to determine if the body parts are connected to a partially dismembered body found Tuesday in a municipal parking lot in Bay Shore, about 25 miles east of Hempstead.

Police Investigating If Arm Found In Hempstead Connected To Remains Discovered In Bay Shore

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the remains in Bay Shore were found by two people who were walking to the Fire Island ferry terminal.

Police sources said investigators have been looking into the possibility the remains are those of Chinelle Latoya Browne, 27, of Brooklyn. Her family reported her missing Saturday.

CBS 2 has learned her distinct tattoos match the tattoos found on the torso in Bayshore. Investigators have been waiting for results of DNA tests.

Tuesday's discovery also prompted Suffolk County police to search the nearby Gilgo Beach area where 10 sets of human remains were found in 2011.

Police said there are no known links between the Bay Shore body and Gilgo, but were investigating as a precaution.
